The feminine note

Is there really a difference to the ear between female and male notes? Clara Schumann thought so. Women have always composed, however, their works were published to a limited degree. Not before the last few decades did this change. Pioneers like Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann didn’t have easy lives with their creative urge. Fanny, eclipsed by her famous brother, Clara, always trivialising her work as “Frauenzimmerarbeit”. Cécil Chaminade and Rebecca Clarke were recognised composers in their day. A remarkable achievement in a world that had not yet emancipated. With text and music the Orion Ensemble draws from the shadows defined by history surprising works by these three composers.
